This program, with the exception of the pool operators course, will give you the certifications needed to be a lifeguard in a swimming pool environment. The pool operators course is something that you may or may not need, but first and foremost, you must complete the basic courses which are offered in our program. The first part of the lifeguard training class will be a screening session.

The prerequisite swimming skills for entry into the new Lifeguard Training course have been revised. The new prerequisite swimming skills test is designed not to judge an individual on his/her stroke mechanics, but rather on his/her overall demonstration of swimming strength, endurance, and comfort level in the water.

The new prerequisite skills for entry into the Lifeguard Training course are:

(Must be 16 years old)

1. Swim 100 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:

  • 50 yards of front crawl with a rescue tube
  • 50 yards of front crawl without a rescue tube

2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object. When returning to the starting point, the candidate must:

  • Hold the 10-pound object with both hands; and
  • Keep his or her face above the water.
